Personal Biography:

I was born in McAlester, Oklahoma and graduated from High School at Walters, Oklahoma.  I received my Bachelor of Arts in Letters with Special Distinction in 1969 from the University of Oklahoma and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.  I served in the United States Army as an infantry officer from 1969 to 1973, including service in the Republic of South Viet Nam.  In 1973 I returned to the University of Oklahoma School of Law where I graduated in 1976 with a Juris Doctor degree.   I have been practicing law since 1976.

Professional Organizations:

 Oklahoma Bar Association

 Cleveland County Bar Association

Oklahoma Planned Giving Council (Director, 1999 to present

Oklahoma City Co-Chair, Leave a Legacy Project, 1999 to  present

Admitted to practice in the following courts:

Oklahoma state courts

United States District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma

United States Supreme Court.

Areas of Practice:

My practice consists of helping people:

Plan, organize and structure their estates before and after they encounter major transitions in life and for the orderly, cost effective transfer when they pass from this life.

Make present or future gifts to charitable and religious organizations.

Establish and administer revocable living and other trusts.

Establish and operate charitable, religious and other public or private tax exempt organizations.

Help in the purchase, sale, and management of real property and mineral interests.

What I am not:

I am not a financial planner, accountant, insurance agent, or financial services specialist.  I work with these other professionals as part of a client's overall estate and financial planning team.

My Fee Schedule:

My hourly rate is $125.00 per hour.  I typically do not undertake contingent fee arrangements.

I bill only for time that I give to your work.

My statements are detailed and broken down by date and time spent so you can see what I have done.

I do not charge "set piece" prices, since I have learned that each client requires different amounts of time in counsel and preparation of documents.  I can give reasonably accurate "ballpark" estimates of what I think your matter will cost.

There are many things that you can do to keep your legal costs down.  I will suggest them to you and assist you if you feel comfortable in doing them.

You may pay me in full (my wife likes that) or, if we agree, over time.

Professional Biography:

I am a sole practitioner in Norman, Oklahoma.

Prior to setting out on my own in March, 1999, I was an attorney at McAlister, McAlister and Burnett, Edmond, Oklahoma where I advised charitable organizations (formation, administration, employee issues, investment of assets, and gifts) and small businesses (formation, employer/employee issues).  My practice also included estate planning; formation and administration of private trusts; guardianship of incapacitated persons and children; administration of estates; and real property, oil and gas.

In 1997 I was counsel for over 30 charitable organizations organized to enact the Oklahoma Charitable Fiduciary Act (60 Okla.Stats. 301.1). This was the first statute in the United States that allowed charitable foundations to legally serve as charitable fiduciaries and clarified the powers of charitable fiduciaries in the administration of trusts.  I provided advice and direction as to the steps necessary to secure passage of this legislation, served as legal resource for explanation and clarification of this legislation, organized and gave direction in securing support of legislators, monitored the progress of the legislation, drafted all legislative information handouts and other written information, represented the charitable organizations during legislative committee hearings, and kept the legislation on track during the session. In 1998 I provided similar services that resulted in passage of the Oklahoma Charitable Gift Annuity Act.

From January 1991 to 1996 I was Vice President, Secretary and General Counsel for a charitable foundation with $130 million+ in assets and 25+ employees.  I advised management and Board of Directors; drafted all corporate documents (e.g. policies and procedures, Employee Handbook); represented the foundation in the receipt and investment of gifts; advised management on employee issues; represented the foundation with donors, beneficiary organizations, suppliers of goods and services, investment advisers, and regulatory bodies; developed model trust to help developmentally disadvantaged children.

Family and Activities:

I am married and have 4 children.  I have lived in Norman, Oklahoma since returning from the Army in 1973.

I have been a Cub Scout Pack Leader (1982-1984).  Since 1985 I have been a Royal Ambassador Director or Counselor.  Royal Ambassadors is a Southern Baptist missions organization for boys.  I know how to build Pinewood Derby and RA Race cars.
